Character Matters
Keeping America's Promises
Character Matters
Lest we forget a time when Americans used to care about a person’s character, it’s eye-opening to remember how the narrator in True Grit, 14 year old Mattie Ross, describes the villain, Tom Chaney:
“That was his cur nature – to change from whining baby to vicious bully as circumstances permitted.”
In this era of character-lite, it might do us all a lot of good to recall how important it is to assess a person’s worth with clear eyes and unapologetic directness.
Where have you gone, Mattie Ross? A nation turns disgusted eyes to you.
(True Grit was written by Charles Portis in 1968, in a galaxy far away.)
